Human Oversight of AI was the topic of our 3rd online meeting of the “Alumni Freiburg – Club Switzerland”. Markus Langer, Professor of Work and Organizational Psychology, gave a presentation and moderated the subsequent, very intensive discussion.

Some of the questions we discussed this time were:

  1. If humans are meant to oversee AI, what can they do better than AI—and do they need to be better at these things in order to provide effective human oversight of AI?

  2. High-risk applications are at the center of regulation. But risk is subjective. Can a shared understanding of what constitutes “high risk” realistically be achieved?

  3. Trust in AI solutions changes over time. How can this be reflected in human oversight of AI?

  4. The parameters and human influences that shape the development of an AI system are no longer fully traceable once development is complete. What forms of oversight are possible after an AI system has been finalized?

  5. After all, AI models are designed to bind users to the model. This incentive will become even stronger when providers’ revenues depend on advertising. Can—and should—potential “overuse” be regulated?

Without doubt, this was a very interesting meeting. Many thanks to Markus for his time, and sincere thanks to everyone who took part in the discussion. With this in mind, thanks as well to Sonja Jost and Lynn-Katrin Haug for organizing the event.
